Ulysse Nardin Just Introduced 7 New Limited Edition Marine Torpilleur Watches
All new items celebrate the brand's 175th anniversary and will be sold as limited editions.
Grand Feu enamel dials, chronographs and high-level complications are on the menu for Ulysse Nardin's Geneva Watch Days, this week's miniature watch fair in Switzerland. Like Bulgari, Ulysse Nardin is a founding partner of the show, and while it focuses on just one collection, it showcased five new models for its Marine Torpilleur collection. All watches feature a silicon escapement (the company pioneered the use of the material on its Freak models in 2001) and are marked with the iconic "Chronometry since 1846" in celebration of Ulysse Nardin's 175th anniversary.
The latest generation of the Marine Torpilleur Chronometer debuted in 2017 as a lighter, thinner iteration of the brand's Marine Chronometer. Today’s additions offer collectors in the market a range of options, including dress watches of all sizes, complications and elegant dial technologies and designs.
While the highlight of this watch is the patented constant escapement tourbillon at 6 o'clock, which won the Tourbillon Grand Prix at the 2015 GPHG (or Oscars in watchmaking), the dial cannot be ignored . Over 90% handcrafted by the glazing workshop Donzé Cadrans, made of the finest black Grand Feu enamel acquired by Ulysse Nardin in 2011. It also features oversized white Roman numerals and a power reserve indicator at 12 o'clock. Properly housed in a polished and satin-finished 5N rose gold case with a fluted bezel.
Marine Torpileur Chronograph of the Year
Two annual chronograph versions ($12,100) with white lacquered or matte blue dials, steel case and fluted bezel, improved independent watchmaker Ludwig Oechslin's 1996 annual calendar system with improved settings , the time and date can now be adjusted by turning the crown forwards or backwards to make setting the time and date easier. The chronograph counter is displayed at 3 o'clock, while the annual calendar and small seconds are displayed in the subdial at 9 o'clock. Measuring 44mm x 13.66mm, this watch is the largest watch in the new collection – requiring a lot of space to fit the components needed to make a chronograph of the year.

Marine Torpileur blue enamel
Sing the blues! Unlike its brother, the Marine Torpielleur Panda (below), this striking Grand Feu blue enamel dial is also handcrafted by Donzé Cadrans. It has contrasting and rather prominent white Roman numerals, as well as cathedral hands. It features a UN-118 movement with a 60-hour power reserve, displayed at 12 o'clock, and a larger subdial at 6 o'clock for the seconds hand and date window. Limited edition 42mm x 11.3mm stainless steel watch.
Ocean Torpileur Panda
This is the first iteration of Ulysse Nardin's panda dial. The Swiss watchmaker's interpretation of the popular dial design - named bear for its two black eyes or counters, usually laid out horizontally in the center of a white dial - and in the same way subverts tradition in vertically arranged counters As marine Torpilleur blue enamel. Here, the blue subdials are set against a white dial with blue oversized Roman numerals. It also features the UN-118 movement, set inside a 43mm x 11.3mm stainless steel case, which is basically the same watch as above, without the Grand Feu enamel, in a different color.
Marine Torpileur Moon Phase
Finally, the Marine Torpilleur's Moon Phase Edition ($9,900) is available with a blue sun-brushed PVD or painted white dial with a 42mm x 11.13mm stainless steel case and fluted bezel. It is powered by movement UN-119, a COSC-certified automatic movement with a 60-hour power reserve displayed at 12 o’clock. Just below, at 6 o'clock, the moon phase is set in a subdial that also reads the small seconds. The moon is made of multi-layered decals, while the starry sky is made of blue PVD.
