In truth, it was pretty clear from the start that it was a masterstroke from Edu. At the age of 18, Martinelli burst onto the scene better than most people would have expected.
Technical director Edu delved into his broad knowledge of Brazilian football again in the summer to sign Marquinhos. The winger is a year older than when Martinelli joined and arrived with slightly more senior experience.
Many expected the 19-year-old to head out on loan this season, Arteta being one of them. But after seeing him in pre-season, Arteta decided he would keep him onboard until January at least.
Three goals in his first three appearances for the under-21 side got Marquinhos off to a good start. And a goal 16 minutes into his first-team debut against FC Zurich last week justified Arteta's decision to keep him amongst the squad.
Edu is earning a reputation of picking up some top talent from not just Brazil but also Europe. It is certainly early days for Marquinhos but he could be the next gem to follow in Martinelli's footsteps.
