If you’ve found yourself tempted to watch White Sox games through your fingers — or from under the safe anonymity of a paper bag — you’re not alone. But even in a season where the product on the field is hard to stomach, there’s at least something worth peeking at over the next few months.
To honor the franchise’s 125th anniversary, the White Sox have unveiled a lineup of notable guest appearances for April, May, and June — a mix of fan favorites, franchise legends, and tributes that offer a welcome distraction from the on-field chaos. From beloved names of the 2005 World Series squad to the family of a future Hall of Famer, these celebrations aim to remind us why we love the South Side, even when the standings don't.
For those still attending games in person (no shame — I’ve got tickets, too), here are the key dates to circle:
Scott Podsednik – The speedster and hero of the 2005 title run will be at Rate Field on Friday, April 11 , and Saturday, April 12 , as the Sox host the Red Sox.
Aaron Rowand – Another grit-and-grind piece of the ’05 puzzle, Rowand returns on Friday, May 2 , for the Astros series.
Family of Dick Allen – The late, great slugger and 1972 AL MVP will be honored on Saturday, May 3 , also during the Houston series, ahead of his posthumous Hall of Fame induction on July 27.
Robin Ventura – A franchise staple both as player and skipper, Ventura will appear Friday, May 9 , and Saturday, May 10 , when the Marlins are in town.
Jack McDowell – The fiery ace and 1993 Cy Young winner, “Black Jack” is scheduled for Friday, June 6 , and Saturday, June 7 , during the Royals series.
Each guest will participate in first-pitch ceremonies and will be involved in fan-facing moments throughout their appearance. Select season ticket holders will have a shot at meet-and-greets and autograph sessions — though space and availability will be limited.
Additional names and events tied to the 125th-anniversary celebration will be rolled out as the season progresses. Keep tabs on all upcoming festivities at whitesox.com/125 .
That said, some glaring omissions from this celebration calendar raise eyebrows. Where are Hall of Famers like Harold Baines, Carlton Fisk, Goose Gossage, Tim Raines, or the Big Hurt himself, Frank Thomas? Jim Thome? And what about the family of Bill Veeck? Why not honor Ozzie Guillén properly and retire his number already? And while we’re at it — how about one night with iconic ballpark organist Nancy Faust, maybe tied to a Mark Buehrle statue reveal?
While the on-field product continues to test fans’ patience, the least the organization can do is get the off-field legacy right. Here's hoping the folks behind the scenes are still working to bring more of these franchise giants back into the spotlight.
